Bits and Pieces of Information

Affiliates, what are they?

bullet

Affiliates are sites which agree to display banners or text links to other sites which are selling a product or offering a service. In exchange the host site is compensated by payments per click on the link, or a percentage of sales made as a result of a customer reaching them through that link. This agreement can be made on an individual basis or through a service such as Commission Junction at cj.com which will collect the commission from each merchant and pay the host site.

Domain name, why pay, I can get one free?

bullet

"http://www.greatbiglittledeal/freepage~page54/andsoforth" if anybody can remember that they have a better memory than me. Secondly it takes weeks or months to get listed on some search engines, if you move to another host you will have to submit again, any listings you have will be useless.

There are companies that will register a "http:yourname.com" domain name for you for free providing that you host your site with them, however if you decide to leave them for any reason you will have to pay them if you want to keep the domain name, usually at a high price.

Email forwarding, what is it?

bullet

When a host offers email forwarding you can have any email sent from links on your site to an account that you already have set up. This lets you check all your mail at once rather than configuring your email program for each address and checking them individually.

.JPEG or .GIF. when do I use them?

bullet

.JPEGs (Joint Photographic Experts Group) are used for photographic art, .GIFs (Graphics Interchange Format) are used for line art.

POP mail, what is it?

bullet

Post Office Protocol, an email protocol specifying rules by which a mail client may retrieve messages from a mail server. With a PPP or SLIP Internet account and POP-based email client software, your primary mail box can be on your own desk-top computer rather than at your access provider's site.

Transparent GIF, what is it?

bullet

A specially rendered GIF image that takes on the background color of a web page. This produces a more professional looking page.

Web page, web site, what is the difference?

bullet

A web page is an HTML document readable by a browser, a web site is a set of named documents at an addressed location.

Web Hosts, what are they?

bullet

A Web Host provides computer space on which your site is stored and from which it is accessed by the viewer.

Webmaster, who is this?

bullet

A webmaster is the person responsible for corporate web operations, qualified to administer all web resources.

WYSIWYG, what does this mean?

bullet

This stands for "what you see is what you get" web sites are written in HTML code which to the novice looks like mumbo-jumbo. There are web page applications now that instead of showing the source code, show only the copy as with a word processor, the HTML is inserted in the background.
